Titans Aim to Bolster WR Depth, but Injury Concerns Loom Over Key Targets

The Tennessee Titans have made significant strides this offseason to strengthen their roster through both the draft and free agency. With new general manager Mike Borgonzi at the helm, the team has addressed several key areas of need in an effort to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season. Despite these improvements, some analysts believe there’s still room for upgrades, particularly at the wide receiver position.

Former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert recently shared his thoughts on the Titans’ roster during a segment on Bleacher Report. He suggested that the team could benefit from taking a flyer on a veteran wide receiver to complement rookie quarterback Cam Ward, the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“Give me DJ Chark as a flyer to the Titans,” Benkert said, according to The Sporting News. “He’s a guy who’s always had potential but hasn’t been healthy enough to stay on the field. Give him one more chance and see if Cam Ward can bring out the best in the former LSU standout. If not Chark, how about Gabe Davis? He could be another veteran presence who might have a resurgence and help out a rookie quarterback.”

While Benkert’s suggestions are intriguing, a closer examination reveals that neither DJ Chark nor Gabe Davis may be the right fit for Tennessee at this time. Health is a major concern for both players. Davis, who was with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, missed the final seven games of the season after undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee. Complications in his recovery have prevented him from returning to full form, and as of June 2025, he remains unsigned due to health concerns. Counting on him to be available by the start of the season would be a gamble.

DJ Chark’s career has also been plagued by injuries. In his seven years in the NFL, he has never completed a full season. Last year, with the Los Angeles Chargers, he appeared in only seven games, struggling with a variety of injuries, including those to his knee, hip, shoulder, and groin. While Chark is known for his physical attributes and had a breakout season in 2019 with 73 catches for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns, his inconsistency and frequent injuries have prevented him from regaining that form in subsequent years.

Gabe Davis, too, has struggled with inconsistency. During his 2023 season with the Buffalo Bills, he showcased flashes of brilliance, such as his 12-catch, 105-yard performance against the Eagles. However, he followed that up with a zero-catch game the very next week against the Jets, despite playing nearly 90% of the offensive snaps. This boom-or-bust pattern has defined much of Davis’s career and casts doubt on his ability to be a reliable target for a developing quarterback like Ward.

Given these concerns, it makes sense that the Titans are opting to focus on developing their younger receiving talent while integrating the experienced veterans they already signed this offseason. Rather than taking a chance on injury-prone or inconsistent players like Chark and Davis, Tennessee appears committed to building a more stable and cohesive offensive unit around Cam Ward. As the team continues its rebuild under Borgonzi’s leadership, patience and internal development may prove to be the smarter long-term strategy.
