Tragedy has struck the San Jose State football community, as former standout wide receiver and coach Chandler Jones has passed away at the age of 33. The university confirmed his death on Monday, mourning the loss of a player who left a significant legacy both on and off the field. According to reports, Jones was fatally struck by a vehicle in Los Angeles during the early hours of June 22.
The accident occurred near the Centinela Avenue off-ramp on the eastbound side of a Los Angeles freeway. MyNewsLA.com reported that Jones was walking on the freeway at approximately 2 a.m. when he was hit by a Toyota RAV4. Authorities have not released further details surrounding the circumstances of the accident, but the news has deeply affected the San Jose State community and the broader college football world.
Jones, a Los Angeles native, had a remarkable collegiate career at San Jose State University, where he cemented himself as one of the best wide receivers in the program’s history. Over his four-year career with the Spartans, he set all-time records for receptions (248) and touchdown catches (31). He remains the only player in school history to record at least 50 receptions in each of his four seasons, a testament to his consistency and high-level performance. He is also one of only four players in the program to notch 60 or more catches in multiple seasons.
His most outstanding season came in 2013, when he exploded for 79 receptions, 1,356 yards, and 15 touchdowns. That dominant performance earned him first-team All-Mountain West honors and recognition as an honorable mention All-American, further solidifying his status as one of the nation’s top wideouts that year. His efforts were crucial in helping elevate San Jose State’s football program during a pivotal time.
After his college career, Jones went on to play professionally with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL), extending his football journey beyond the NCAA. However, his connection to San Jose State didn’t end with his playing days. In 2017, he returned to his alma mater to begin his coaching career as a defensive assistant, further contributing to the program that had meant so much to him.
San Jose State honored his memory on social media, sharing a heartfelt tribute: “Forever in our hearts, #89.” The post echoed the sentiment shared by many in the Spartan community—Jones was more than just a record-holder; he was a beloved teammate, coach, and individual.
Chandler Jones’ sudden passing leaves a void in the San Jose State football family and serves as a sobering reminder of how fragile life can be, even for those who once dazzled fans with their athletic brilliance.
