As the Michigan Wolverines head into the 2025 college football season, the biggest topic of conversation surrounding the program is without question the quarterback situation. The team currently finds itself in the middle of a highly anticipated competition between two promising young signal-callers this spring, while a more experienced option works toward returning to the field. It seems clear that fans and analysts alike won’t have a final answer for several more months.
Fortunately for head coach Sherrone Moore and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, there’s no immediate pressure to name a starter just yet. The coaching staff still has plenty of time to evaluate their options and carefully determine who will lead the Wolverines’ offense when they open the season at Michigan Stadium against New Mexico. With several months remaining, including the entirety of summer workouts and fall camp, the decision can be made without rushing into anything prematurely.

Recently, Moore offered insight into when fans can realistically expect to learn who the team’s starting quarterback will be. In a conversation with On3’s J.D. PicKell, Moore laid out a clear timeline and explained the importance of letting the competition play out fully.
“In my experience, those quarterback battles tend to stretch into fall camp,” Moore said. “You might see some things start to take shape in the spring, but those competitions often shift by the time camp rolls around. We want to be very deliberate in this process and make sure we identify the right person for the job. So for us, it’ll likely continue through fall camp and probably come down to about a week before our first game before we make a final decision and announcement.”
As of now, three candidates are vying for the starting job. Five-star true freshman Bryce Underwood has reportedly made an immediate impression in spring practices. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Jadyn Davis has made significant progress since last season and has capitalized on additional reps this spring, especially with Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene sidelined by an undisclosed injury.
Moore praised Davis’s development, noting how his confidence and decision-making have notably improved. “I think the quarterback position is still wide open,” Moore remarked. “I’m looking forward to seeing how things unfold during the spring game and how that momentum carries into the summer and fall. Jadyn has taken huge steps — you can really see the flashes of the player he was in high school now showing up during our practices. I’m proud of how far he’s come, and it’s only raised the level of competition.”
Wolverines fans should circle Monday, August 25, on their calendars. That’s when Moore is expected to address the media in the week leading up to the season opener. If no starting quarterback is named by then, it might mean Michigan plans to keep their decision under wraps until the team takes the field for warmups against New Mexico.
