The Boston Red Sox have their sights set not only on securing a postseason berth but also on contending for a World Series championship. To achieve this, they recognize the necessity of continuously reinforcing their roster with dependable, high-impact players. One area they are particularly focused on is pitching, as demonstrated by the success of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have consistently built championship-caliber teams by stockpiling elite arms.
A potential blockbuster move could see the Red Sox pursuing two-time All-Star and National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa recently identified Boston, along with the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles, as top candidates to acquire the Miami Marlins ace.

“The question is not if the Marlins will trade Alcantara, but when,” Axisa reported. “The 2022 NL Cy Young winner missed last season due to Tommy John surgery, but he has now completed his rehab and is throwing gas this spring. At just 29 years old, Alcantara remains a valuable asset with a manageable contract, making him an attractive option for teams in need of pitching reinforcements.”
Alcantara’s current contract includes a $17 million salary for both this season and next, with a $21 million club option for 2027. Given his affordability and potential to return to elite form, he is expected to generate significant interest as the trade deadline approaches.
The Marlins, once a promising Wild Card contender, have struggled mightily in recent seasons, plummeting to a 62-100 record. Their downturn has been fueled by the departure of key veterans and Alcantara’s absence due to injury. However, now fully recovered, he is determined to regain his 2022 dominance, when he posted a stellar 2.28 ERA. A move to a team like the Red Sox—hungry for elite pitching—could provide him with the perfect platform to return to his All-Star form.
Boston took steps to improve its pitching staff in the offseason after finishing last year ranked 17th in ERA (4.04), 22nd in hits allowed (1,363), and 23rd in runs allowed (747). One of their most notable additions was former Chicago White Sox starter Garrett Crochet. However, with injuries already impacting starters Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito before the season even began, the Red Sox could be motivated to act quickly to secure a top-tier arm like Alcantara.
With the trade deadline looming, all eyes will be on Boston’s front office to see if they make a move that could significantly bolster their rotation and strengthen their push toward October baseball.
