New England Patriots Determined to Strengthen Wide Receiver Corps, Eyeing A.J. Brown
The New England Patriots are fully committed to upgrading their wide receiver group and are willing to explore every possible option, including a potential trade for Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown, a player with strong ties to Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.
According to NBC Sports’ Matthew Berry, the Patriots reached out to the reigning Super Bowl champions to inquire about Brown’s availability. While it remains uncertain whether the Eagles entertained the idea, Berry emphasized one clear takeaway: New England is determined to aggressively pursue top-tier receiving talent this offseason.

This level of urgency is long overdue for the Patriots, who have struggled with inconsistent draft selections and short-term free-agent solutions at the position in recent years. Acquiring Brown would mark a significant shift, as he is a proven playmaker with a rare blend of physicality and skill—qualities that Vrabel knows how to maximize.
Mike Vrabel and A.J. Brown: A Potential Reunion
Brown first rose to prominence under Vrabel’s leadership with the Tennessee Titans, posting consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020. More than just statistics, he played a pivotal role in shaping the Titans’ offensive identity, bringing toughness and physicality to the passing game.
Vrabel’s Titans were built around a power-run philosophy, led by Derrick Henry, but Brown complemented that approach with his aggressive style of play. At 6-foot-1 and 226 pounds, Brown is exceptionally difficult to jam at the line of scrimmage and thrives after the catch, breaking an impressive 51 tackles since entering the league as a second-round pick in 2019.
His dominance against single coverage is another key reason he would be a game-changing addition for the Patriots. During the Eagles’ recent Super Bowl run, Brown led the NFL in multiple categories when facing single coverage, per Pro Football Focus:
- 97.7 PFF grade (1st)
- 156 receptions (1st)
- 2,764 receiving yards (1st)
- 24 touchdowns (1st)
- 70 explosive plays (1st)
Why Brown Is the Perfect Fit for the Patriots
New England’s young quarterback, Drake Maye, would benefit tremendously from a true No. 1 receiver, someone who can dominate matchups and command defensive attention. Brown fits that mold perfectly and would instantly become the focal point of the Patriots’ passing attack.
However, prying him away from Philadelphia would likely require a significant trade package. Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald suggests that while giving up the No. 4 overall pick might be excessive, a future first-round selection or multiple second-day draft picks could be enough to facilitate a deal.
While New England must also focus on strengthening its offensive line to protect Maye, securing an elite receiver like Brown could be just as crucial to the young quarterback’s development. Given Brown’s established relationship with Vrabel and his ability to take over games, the Patriots should continue discussions with the Eagles in hopes of making this trade a reality.
