Milwaukee Brewers pitcher J.B. Bukauskas is among a crowded group of candidates competing for the team’s final bullpen spots this spring. The former first-round draft pick rejoined the organization on a minor league deal and received a non-roster invite to big league spring training. As full-squad workouts progress, pitchers are getting their initial bullpen sessions in and facing live hitters before Cactus League games begin. Unfortunately for Bukauskas, his bid to make the Opening Day roster has already hit a roadblock.
According to Brewers manager Pat Murphy, Bukauskas sustained an injury during a live batting practice session and was subsequently sent for an MRI. The results have not yet been revealed, but it is an early concern for the 28-year-old, who was already facing stiff competition to earn a bullpen role. This latest setback adds to a growing list of injuries that have plagued Bukauskas in recent years.

During the 2024 season, Bukauskas spent significant time on the injured list. He started the year in Milwaukee’s bullpen and performed well, recording a stellar 1.50 ERA in six appearances. However, he suffered a lat strain and landed on the IL on April 14th. His return was delayed multiple times, first when he suffered another injury during a rehab assignment in June, then again in July when a separate injury forced him to shut down for the remainder of the season. Now, with spring training just beginning, it appears his unfortunate string of injuries may be continuing.
At this point, it remains uncertain how serious Bukauskas’ latest injury is or whether he will be forced to miss time. The Brewers are awaiting MRI results, which will determine the next steps in his recovery. Even if the injury is minor, missing any time in camp puts him at a disadvantage in the battle for a bullpen spot.
Bukauskas does have a minor league option remaining, which could provide the Brewers with some flexibility. However, with multiple non-roster invitees also vying for a spot in the bullpen, this setback makes his path to the Opening Day roster even steeper. As he works his way back, he will need to regain momentum quickly to keep pace with the competition in camp.
