Phillies Ink Top International Prospect with Rich Baseball Heritage

Nieves Izaguirre’s connection to baseball is more than just familial; it’s deeply ingrained in his DNA. Recently signed by the Philadelphia Phillies, the 17-year-old Venezuelan shortstop is ranked as the No. 44 prospect in the 2025 international class, according to MLB Pipeline. His signing bonus, worth $800,000, highlights the team’s confidence in his potential, especially given the $6.26 million international signing pool at the Phillies’ disposal.

Izaguirre hails from an extraordinary baseball lineage, with over 60 of his relatives having played professional baseball. Among them are two prominent names familiar to Phillies fans: Ronald Acuña Jr. and Luisangel Acuña, both of whom Izaguirre refers to as cousins. This rich heritage has undoubtedly influenced his advanced baseball acumen, which scouts have consistently praised. Despite his relatively modest size—standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 160 pounds—Izaguirre’s game intelligence and developmental maturity set him apart.

At the plate, Izaguirre demonstrates a disciplined and strategic offensive approach. His preference for line drives over power-hitting showcases his ability to prioritize consistent contact over raw power, a skill supported by his strong plate discipline and keen understanding of the strike zone. His athleticism further enhances his impact, both offensively and defensively. With a recorded 60-yard dash time as fast as 6.5 seconds, Izaguirre’s speed makes him a potential threat on the basepaths. This quickness also translates to his fielding, where his agility and instincts have allowed him to make highlight-worthy plays. While his physical build might resemble that of a second baseman, his defensive abilities suggest he has the potential to remain at shortstop as he progresses.

Izaguirre’s arrival comes at a pivotal time for the Phillies’ international scouting efforts. Two years ago, Philadelphia made waves in the international market by signing Starlyn Caba for $3 million. Caba quickly developed into a Top 100 prospect and contributed significantly to the Phillies’ minor league system before being included in a trade package for Jesús Luzardo. With Caba’s departure, Izaguirre has the opportunity to establish himself as a cornerstone shortstop in the lower levels of the organization while No. 1 Phillies prospect Aidan Miller continues his trajectory toward the big leagues.

The international signing period runs from January 15 to December 15, with players born between September 1, 2007, and August 31, 2008, eligible to sign in the current window. To qualify, players must turn 16 before signing and 17 before September 1 of the following year.

In addition to Izaguirre, the Phillies made several notable international signings, including Elias Marrero (INF, Dominican Republic, $700,000), Deivis Velasquez (C, Venezuela, $620,000), Geremy Villoria (RHP, Venezuela, $425,000), Leonardo Carpio (OF, Venezuela, $350,000), and Dayber Cruceta (OF, Dominican Republic, $300,000). These signings reflect the Phillies’ commitment to strengthening their farm system through international talent, with Izaguirre standing out as a player to watch in the coming years.
