The Michigan Wolverines football team has secured another valuable addition from the transfer portal, bolstering their roster for the 2025 season. On Sunday, former UMass and Arizona wide receiver Anthony Simpson announced his commitment to Michigan. Simpson brings extensive experience to the Wolverines’ wide receiver group, having already played four years of college football. His journey has taken him from Arizona to UMass, and now to Ann Arbor, where he looks to make a significant impact.
Simpson’s career began at Arizona in 2021, where he saw limited playing time. Over two seasons with the Wildcats, he recorded just eight receptions for 102 yards. However, his breakout came in 2023 after transferring to UMass. That season, Simpson tallied 57 catches for 792 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing his potential as a dynamic playmaker. Unfortunately, his 2024 campaign was cut short after just two games due to an injury, and he parted ways with the UMass football program shortly after. While the circumstances of his departure remain unclear, Simpson entered the transfer portal seeking a fresh start.
Michigan’s need for an experienced wide receiver was evident after a 2024 season in which their passing game struggled, partly due to inconsistent quarterback play. Adding Simpson, who has accumulated 1,434 total yards in his career (including 342 return yards at Arizona in 2022), addresses this need. His proven ability to produce, as demonstrated during his standout year at UMass, makes him a valuable asset for the Wolverines’ offense.
Simpson is not the only recent addition to Michigan’s roster. On the same day, the Wolverines also landed Louisiana transfer cornerback Caleb Anderson. The 6’3″, 210-pound grad transfer has one year of eligibility remaining and brings depth to Michigan’s secondary. Over four seasons with Louisiana, Anderson totaled 59 tackles and two interceptions. His size and experience fill a critical position of need for the Wolverines, who are looking to shore up their defense.
These moves signal Michigan’s commitment to addressing key areas of weakness heading into the 2025 season. With Simpson enhancing the receiving corps and Anderson strengthening the defensive backfield, the Wolverines are positioning themselves for improvement after a challenging 2024 campaign. These transfers reflect the team’s aggressive approach to building a competitive roster and ensuring the offense and defense are better equipped for success in the upcoming season.
