Just In: Knicks to Add Another 20-Point Scorer Before Trade Deadline

The New York Knicks could potentially address their bench-scoring struggles with a significant move this winter by targeting Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson in a trade.

According to Jed Katz of New York Knicks on SI (via YardBarker), the Knicks should seriously consider pursuing Johnson, a player who is reportedly drawing strong interest on the trade market. Katz highlighted the value Johnson could bring to the Knicks and explained why the team should join the pursuit for the versatile forward:

“The Knicks would have to put together a package of at least one young player and a first-round pick. The team already gave the Nets a haul of first-round picks in the trade to acquire Mikal Bridges, but grabbing another near-20-point-per-game scorer in Johnson would legitimize New York’s rotation,” Katz wrote.

He further elaborated that while the trade scenario is unlikely, it’s not impossible, particularly given Brooklyn’s current interest in trading veteran players for future assets. Katz emphasized the urgency for the Knicks to bolster their depth, noting, “New York simply can’t go into the postseason lacking this much talent from the bench.”

Cam Johnson, now in his prime, is having a career year for the Nets. The 28-year-old forward is averaging an impressive 19.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game while shooting 49.6% from the field and a remarkable 43.6% from three-point range. Despite his stellar stats, Johnson is achieving these numbers on just 12.8 shot attempts per game, showcasing his efficiency. His current performance aligns with the expectations set during his tenure with the Phoenix Suns when he was often viewed as a future breakout star.

For the Knicks, Johnson’s scoring prowess could provide the offensive boost their bench desperately needs. Currently, New York has the lowest-scoring bench in the NBA, averaging just 19.8 points per game. Adding Johnson to the rotation would give the second unit a much-needed spark and allow him to continue his productive offensive play in a more limited role.

Although Johnson may prefer starting, given his history behind Mikal Bridges and Jae Crowder in Phoenix, joining the Knicks could present an appealing opportunity to contribute to a contending team. If the Knicks are intent on assembling a championship-caliber roster and addressing their biggest weakness, pursuing Cam Johnson could be a transformative move. By resolving their bench-scoring issues, the Knicks would not only enhance their playoff prospects but also signal their commitment to making a deep postseason run.
