A New York Mets insider has hinted that the team might target an elite hitter who was recently linked to a potential trade to the New York Yankees. This revelation adds yet another layer of intrigue to what has already been an eventful offseason for the Mets.
The Mets entered the offseason with a packed agenda, headlined by the need to rebuild their starting rotation. They addressed this by signing several promising arms and made waves by signing former Yankees star Juan Soto to the largest contract in sports history. With spring training just around the corner, the team’s focus has now shifted to other pressing concerns, particularly the uncertainty surrounding their first base position for 2025 and beyond.
All-Star slugger Pete Alonso, a cornerstone of the Mets’ offense, is set to hit free agency. Despite a less competitive market than anticipated, Alonso and the Mets remain far apart in negotiations. SNY MLB insider Andy Martino explored the team’s potential options in a recent column, noting that the Mets might rely on internal candidates such as Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuña, and Ronny Mauricio to fill the void if Alonso departs. These players could rotate between first and third base to provide flexibility for the lineup.
However, Martino also floated an intriguing alternative: targeting San Diego Padres star Luis Arraez in a trade. Arraez, a three-time All-Star and one of the best contact hitters in baseball, has been linked to trade rumors involving the Yankees, who reportedly view him as a potential replacement for Gleyber Torres at second base. With the Padres open to moving Arraez before his contract expires next offseason, the Mets could swoop in and beat their cross-town rivals to secure his services.
Arraez posted strong numbers in 2024, slashing .318/.346/.398 with 61 runs, 4 home runs, and 41 RBIs. His ability to play multiple positions—including second base, third base, and first base—makes him a versatile asset. While he wouldn’t replace Alonso’s power, Arraez’s elite on-base skills could provide a dynamic presence at the top of the Mets’ lineup, setting the table for stars like Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto.
With the Padres reportedly willing to deal Arraez while his trade value is high, the Mets have a unique opportunity to strengthen their roster and outmaneuver the Yankees once again. If Alonso doesn’t return, adding Arraez could give the Mets a new look and help solidify their lineup heading into 2025.
