Chris Olave’s season has officially come to an end.
The New Orleans Saints announced that their star wide receiver will not play in Sunday’s season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This decision marks the conclusion of Olave’s effort to return to action after being sidelined by a concussion since Week 9. Additionally, the Saints ruled out linebacker Pete Werner, who was in the concussion protocol this week.
Olave had been practicing with the team for the past few weeks, raising hopes for a potential return. However, interim head coach Darren Rizzi opted to prioritize caution, especially given that Olave has suffered multiple concussions this season. The decision underscores the team’s commitment to protecting its young star’s long-term health.
Before his injury, Olave was on track for a remarkable third consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season to start his NFL career, a feat that would have placed him among an elite group in league history. Unfortunately, his season was cut short after just eight games, during which he recorded 32 receptions for 400 yards and one touchdown. While his production was limited, Olave’s talent and potential remain undeniable, and the Saints will undoubtedly look forward to his return in 2025.
The Saints also announced roster moves that could significantly impact their offensive lineup for the finale. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, along with safety Millard Bradford, was elevated from the practice squad. Edwards-Helaire, a Baton Rouge native and former LSU standout, made his Saints debut last week, rushing for 20 yards on five carries. With key running backs Alvin Kamara (groin) and Kendre Miller (concussion) ruled out, Edwards-Helaire may take on a larger role in the team’s ground attack.
The season finale against the Buccaneers will see the Saints relying on a patchwork lineup due to injuries to key players. Despite the challenges, the team will aim to finish their season on a high note while evaluating younger players like Edwards-Helaire and Bradford for potential roles in the future.
While Olave’s absence is a significant blow, the Saints are focused on preserving his health and ensuring he returns fully recovered for the next season. His contributions during his limited time on the field this year showcased his exceptional skills, leaving no doubt that he will continue to be a cornerstone of the franchise moving forward.
