Michigan’s Defensive Line Depth Takes a Hit as Promising Four-Star Freshman DL Enters Transfer Portal

Michigan’s defensive line depth took a significant blow this week with the news that freshman Owen Wafle has entered the transfer portal after his redshirt season in Ann Arbor. The 6-foot-2, 298-pound defensive lineman from New Jersey leaves the program without having seen any game action in 2024. Prior to joining Michigan, Wafle was a standout at the Hun School in New Jersey, helping lead the team to two consecutive undefeated seasons. In his senior year, he registered 64 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks. His junior season was also impressive, with 47 tackles, five for loss, and one sack, as Hun went 9-0. His disruptive play against top competition earned him a four-star ranking and attracted interest from several prominent college programs.

Wafle, who had originally committed to Notre Dame, chose Michigan after receiving offers from programs like Oklahoma, Iowa, Duke, Michigan State, and West Virginia. His recruitment was considered a major win for the Wolverines. Scouting reports viewed him as a prototypical interior defensive lineman, with a strong build and natural leverage that made him a potential force against the run game. His mobility and quick first step also earned praise from evaluators. Despite this, Michigan did not give him the chance to showcase his talents in 2024.

Beyond his physical gifts, Wafle’s technical development was expected to make him a valuable asset on the defensive line. While his pass-rushing moves were still a work in progress, his intelligence and work ethic suggested he would be able to refine his skills over time.

Wafle’s transfer is particularly challenging for Michigan as his younger brother, Luke, a 2026 four-star edge rusher, has been a top target for the Wolverines since receiving an offer last January. Owen’s departure could complicate the recruitment of Luke. However, since Wafle hasn’t played a game yet, he retains all four years of eligibility, which should make him an appealing prospect in the transfer portal. Although his exit won’t have an immediate impact on Michigan’s defensive line rotation, it represents a loss of potential depth and future talent.
