The Eagles have yet to officially rule out Jalen Hurts for Sunday’s game, but the starting quarterback has been listed as a non-participant in practice for the first two days of the week due to a concussion. In his absence, it looks increasingly likely that Kenny Pickett will step in as the starter against the Dallas Cowboys.
While head coach Nick Sirianni remained evasive about the team’s quarterback plans during Thursday’s press conference, Pickett confirmed that he was a full participant in practice despite dealing with a rib injury. The 26-year-old quarterback stated that he plans to wear additional padding in his flak jacket on Sunday but is optimistic about feeling much better by game time.
“This is a big opportunity,” Pickett said. “I’ve been working hard to stay ready. I felt good about my preparation last game, and having a full week to practice with the team, I’ll feel even better heading into the stadium. I’m excited and just want to get the win.”
If Pickett starts on Sunday, it will mark his first start in over a year. The former first-round pick started 24 games for the Steelers across the 2022 and 2023 seasons but was benched in December last year and later traded to the Eagles in the offseason. For Pickett, a New Jersey native and lifelong Eagles fan, the opportunity to help Philadelphia clinch the NFC East with a win over Dallas holds personal significance.
“I’ve got a lot of family coming,” Pickett shared. “It’s a surreal feeling to have this opportunity. I’m doing everything I can to prepare for it, and I’m excited.”
Pickett stepped in for Hurts last week after Hurts left the game against the Commanders in the first quarter with a concussion. While Pickett had an up-and-down outing in relief—completing 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown, and one interception—this week presents a different scenario. The Eagles can craft a game plan tailored to Pickett’s strengths, and he’s been practicing with the first-team offense, building crucial timing with top targets like A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.
“Timing is everything, especially in the NFL,” Pickett said. “Getting those extra reps with the receivers and spending time with the offensive line and running backs is huge. It all plays into quarterback and receiver chemistry.”
Pickett’s professionalism since joining the Eagles has earned him praise from Sirianni, who highlighted his commitment to improving every day. If Hurts is officially ruled out, Pickett is expected to start, with Tanner McKee and Ian Book, recently re-signed to the practice squad, serving as backups.
Reflecting on his transition to Philadelphia, Pickett expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the Eagles’ system and locker room. Now, he’s focused on making the most of his chance to contribute in a pivotal game. “It’s been great to be here,” Pickett said. “This is a special group, and I’m just looking to do my part now.”
