Dyontae Johnson, a linebacker who has been on injured reserve for the entire 2023 season, was activated by the New York Giants on Tuesday. Johnson had an impressive showing during training camp but suffered an ankle injury that was initially expected to keep him out for just a few weeks. However, the Giants kept him on injured reserve for a longer period, only recently opening his 21-day practice window three weeks ago. As that window neared its end, the team added Johnson to their 53-man roster.
Reflecting on his journey, Johnson shared his thoughts on his development: “Definitely felt like I took that next step from year one to year two,” he said. The injury was particularly difficult for him, as it came after a strong offseason of work. “It was hard, just knowing that all my hard work had paid off, but I couldn’t play,” he added. Despite the setback, Johnson remains thankful for the opportunity to continue his career with the Giants
For the majority of the 2023 season, Johnson spent time on the Giants’ practice squad, waiting for an opportunity to return to the active roster. After months of recovery, he is now set to contribute to the team, offering depth to the linebacker position as the season progresses.
In a corresponding move, the Giants waived undrafted rookie free agent defensive tackle Casey Rogers to make room for Johnson. Rogers had appeared in two games this season, playing 33 snaps after being promoted to the 53-man roster. His departure clears the way for Johnson’s return to active duty.
In addition to Johnson’s activation, the Giants also opened the practice window for veteran defensive tackle Armon Watts, who has been on IR due to a shoulder injury. This move suggests the team is hoping to bolster its defensive line in the coming weeks as both Johnson and Watts work their way back to full health.
