Breaking: Michigan Secures Alabama Star in Major Transfer Portal Acquisition

Michigan has made a significant move in the transfer portal, securing former Alabama defensive lineman Damon Payne to bolster its roster for the 2025 season, as reported by On3 on Wednesday morning.

Payne, a redshirt junior, brings both size and skill to Michigan’s defensive front. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 313 pounds, the Belleville, Michigan native returns to his home state after spending four years at Alabama. Payne’s decision to join the Wolverines came swiftly after news broke on Tuesday of his intention to enter the transfer portal.

The highly-regarded defensive lineman becomes the 15th Alabama player to transfer during the current 20-day winter transfer window. Payne was a consistent presence for Alabama in 2024, playing in all 12 regular-season games and earning his first career start in mid-October against South Carolina. Over the season, he recorded 14 tackles, including five solo tackles, and recovered one fumble as his role along Alabama’s defensive front expanded. Despite his contributions, Payne opted to leave the Crimson Tide and return to Michigan to continue his collegiate career.

Payne’s journey has been one of steady progression. After redshirting in 2021, he appeared in six games during the 2022 season. His playing time increased in 2023 as he became a rotational player along Alabama’s defensive line. By 2024, Payne had established himself as a reliable contributor in the trenches, making his decision to leave Alabama a notable development for both programs.

For Michigan, Payne represents a significant addition to its defensive unit. His combination of size, athleticism, and experience in the highly competitive SEC will undoubtedly bolster the Wolverines’ efforts in the Big Ten. Payne’s decision to move from one tradition-rich program to another also underscores Michigan’s ability to attract top-tier talent.

Interestingly, Payne’s former team, Alabama, will meet his new team, Michigan, in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31. While Payne will not suit up for the Wolverines in the game, the matchup adds an intriguing layer to his transition between these storied programs.
