The Minnesota Vikings will be without veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore for their upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons, as the 12-year NFL standout continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Although head coach Kevin O’Connell initially left room for optimism earlier in the week, it has now been confirmed that Gilmore will not take the field on Sunday
Gilmore has been a consistent presence in the Vikings’ secondary this season, starting all 12 games while contributing 47 tackles and one interception. His absence leaves a significant gap in the team’s defense. The only cornerback currently available on the active roster is rookie Dwight McGlothern, who has yet to play in a regular-season game.
Despite being inactive for all 12 games so far, McGlothern earned a spot on the 53-man roster following an impressive performance during training camp. With the team short-handed, the undrafted rookie may now be thrust into a critical role.
“Had a great training camp,” O’Connell said when discussing McGlothern. “There’s always that young DB who seems to make a play every day, and Dwight was definitely that. He’s got really good natural skills to play the position and cover. He fits in alignment with how we’re playing tighter coverage now, getting up on people. He’s ready for the opportunity.”
While McGlothern prepares for a potential NFL debut, the Vikings will sorely miss the leadership and talent of Gilmore. Drafted 10th overall by the Buffalo Bills in 2012, Gilmore quickly emerged as one of the league’s premier cornerbacks. Over five seasons with Buffalo, he built a reputation for neutralizing top receivers. In 2017, he signed with the New England Patriots, where he became a cornerstone of their defense. Gilmore earned NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2019 after leading the league in interceptions and playing a pivotal role in the Patriots’ Super Bowl LIII victory.
The Vikings’ current predicament underscores the importance of depth in a long NFL season. McGlothern’s development and readiness will be put to the test against Atlanta’s offense, which features a potent passing attack capable of exploiting inexperienced defenders.
For Minnesota, the challenge extends beyond this weekend. As the team fights to stay competitive in the playoff race, they’ll need their defense to remain resilient despite losing a key player. McGlothern’s ability to step into the role and perform under pressure will be crucial not only for this game but also for the Vikings’ prospects moving forward.
Though the loss of Gilmore is significant, it presents McGlothern with a unique opportunity to prove himself at the highest level. For the Vikings, supporting their rookie cornerback and adjusting their game plan will be essential to overcoming this adversity and maintaining momentum in the critical weeks ahead.
