Dave Zangaro and Reuben Frank discuss Jalen Carter’s recent strong performance on the Eagles’ defense and respond to Vic Fangio’s comments about how he’s been officiated.
With tight end Dallas Goedert sidelined by a knee injury, the Eagles added practice squad tight end C.J. Uzomah to the 53-man roster on Wednesday. Goedert hurt his knee in the fourth quarter of the Eagles’ game against the Ravens in Baltimore and had to leave early. Head coach Nick Sirianni said on Monday that it’s uncertain whether Goedert will be available for this weekend’s game against the Panthers.
Uzomah has been with the Eagles for the past three games as a practice squad elevation but has exhausted his game-day call-ups. Over that span, he has played 39 offensive snaps and 13 on special teams, but hasn’t been targeted in the passing game. “He’s a veteran who’s a great teammate,” Sirianni said on Wednesday. “Everyone we’ve talked to from his past teams has said the same thing about him: he’s a great guy to have in the locker room. I think you could ask his teammates, especially in the tight end room, and they’d say the same—he’s a glue guy who’s done well on special teams and has made the most of his chances.”
Sirianni also praised Uzomah’s blocking, noting a strong performance during a critical moment in the game. “He had a really good play in the four-minute drill, where he got great movement on a good player,” said Sirianni. “He’s a reliable veteran who brings people together and has the ability to make plays when needed, both as a blocker and a potential receiving target.”
Goedert has 38 catches for 441 yards and two touchdowns through nine games this season. He missed three games earlier in the year due to a hamstring injury. Since 2020, Goedert has missed 18 games. This year, he ranks 7th among tight ends in receiving yards per game (49.0). Over his career, he averages 44 yards per game, which ranks 19th among tight ends with at least 200 career receptions.
Uzomah, 31, is a 10-year NFL veteran with 192 catches for 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns across 109 career games. His best seasons were in 2018 (43 catches for 439 yards, 3 TDs) and 2021 (49 catches for 493 yards, 5 TDs), both with the Bengals. He played the last two seasons with the Jets.
Other than Goedert and Uzomah, Grant Calcaterra is the only other tight end on the Eagles’ 53-man roster. Calcaterra has 17 catches for 216 yards this year and had a strong stretch earlier in the season, catching 9 passes for 93 yards in three games when Goedert was injured. E.J. Jenkins, another tight end, is currently on the practice squad. Jenkins has appeared in three games this season, contributing 16 snaps on offense and 23 on special teams.
To fill Uzomah’s spot on the practice squad, the Eagles re-signed wide receiver Parris Campbell, who had been released from the 53-man roster on Monday. Campbell, a former second-round pick by the Colts, has 6 catches for 30 yards this season and caught a touchdown against the Buccaneers. He is out of game-day elevations, so he would need to be re-signed to the 53-man roster to play again this season. Campbell is one of eight players who have caught touchdown passes from both Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts, along with Alshon Jeffery, Dallas Goedert, Greg Ward, Zach Pascal, DeSean Jackson, Zach Ertz, and Jalen Reagor.
