Philadelphia Eagles fullback/linebacker Ben VanSumeren suffered a season-ending knee injury during Friday’s practice, as reported by Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The injury is a significant setback for VanSumeren, who had worked his way into a versatile role with the team after signing as an undrafted rookie free agent last year.
VanSumeren had carved out a spot as a lead blocker on offense while also providing depth at linebacker and contributing on special teams. This season, he played 22 offensive snaps and 213 special teams snaps but had not seen action on defense. His absence now leaves the Eagles with fewer options at both fullback and linebacker.
It remains to be seen whether the Eagles will try to replace VanSumeren as a fullback or simply forgo the position moving forward. Given the team’s current offensive and defensive alignment, it seems more likely they may not prioritize filling the fullback role.
The injury also creates more depth concerns at linebacker. With Zach Baun and Nakobe Dean as the starting off-ball linebackers, the only backup options are Oren Burks and rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr. Dallas Gant, who is on the practice squad, is also available but is untested in game action this season.
To free up a roster spot for an injury replacement ahead of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, the Eagles have until 4:00 PM Eastern on Saturday to place VanSumeren on injured reserve. If that move isn’t made by the deadline, it is likely to happen next week.
The team and fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for VanSumeren as he faces a long road back from this injury.
