Breaking News: Eagles Make Strategic Roster Adjustments with Key Addition Ahead of Playoff Push

The Philadelphia Eagles made some roster updates on Friday morning, with two key moves involving outside linebackers (OLBs). The team announced the signing of Ochaun Mathis to their practice squad while releasing David Anenih from the same squad.

Ochaun Mathis, a 6’5”, 250-pound edge rusher, was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft (No. 189 overall). During his rookie season, Mathis participated in 74 defensive snaps and 19 special teams snaps. However, he was waived by the Rams before the 2024 season. Shortly after, Mathis joined the New England Patriots’ practice squad and was later promoted to the active roster in late October.

While with the Patriots, Mathis played 11 defensive snaps and 80 special teams snaps. He was released by New England earlier this week, and now the Eagles have brought him on board to strengthen their depth at edge rusher and special teams. At just 25 years old, Mathis offers potential for development, and the Eagles appear to value his upside.

In contrast, the Eagles decided to release David Anenih from their practice squad. Anenih had been signed by the team in mid-September, but it seems the Eagles prefer Mathis as a better fit for their needs at the OLB position. The move indicates that the Eagles are looking to further solidify their depth at edge rusher.

With these roster changes, the Eagles are continuing to make adjustments as they prepare for the remainder of the season. Mathis, with his blend of size and special teams experience, will look to contribute to the team’s defensive and special teams units moving forward. Meanwhile, Anenih’s release marks the end of his brief tenure with the Eagles.
