The New York Yankees are expected to be active in free agency, with MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today predicting that they’ll secure star third baseman Alex Bregman. Bregman, who just finished a five-year, $100 million contract with the Houston Astros, is among the top free-agent hitters available.
Nightengale highlighted Bregman’s desire for the big stage, writing, “He’s always loved the spotlight, dreamed of playing on the big stage, and what’s bigger than New York.” With both New York teams interested, the Yankees are seen as the likely winners.
Bregman would bring power to the Yankees’ lineup as a starting third baseman. Last season, he batted .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, with career highs of 41 home runs and 112 RBIs set in 2019. His addition could help replace Soto, whom Nightengale expects to sign with the Blue Jays on a massive 14-year, $630 million deal.
At 30, Bregman is positioned for a significant multi-year contract. MLBTradeRumors projects a seven-year, $182 million deal, with comparisons to recent contracts like Matt Chapman’s six-year, $151 million deal. While Bregman may seek a $200 million contract, his age might make a seven-year offer more realistic.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are also focused on retaining Soto, with GM Brian Cashman confirming they’ll “put their best foot forward” in negotiations with his agent, Scott Boras. If they’re unable to retain him, Cashman says they’ll explore other impactful options in the market. Soto, who hit .288 with 41 home runs and 109 RBIs last season, remains a top priority.
