The New York Mets may soon be in the market for a new first baseman, as Pete Alonso is approaching free agency. In a recent discussion on *Baseball Night in New York*, MLB analyst Anthony McCarron suggested a high-profile trade that would involve the Mets acquiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from the Toronto Blue Jays.
In this proposed trade scenario, the Mets would receive:
– 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
In exchange, the Blue Jays would acquire:
– SS/OF Jett Williams
– OF Ryan Clifford
– UTIL Jeff McNeil
This blockbuster trade would solidify the Mets’ first base position with Guerrero Jr., while the Blue Jays would gain McNeil and two top Mets prospects, with Williams ranked first and Clifford fourth in the Mets’ farm system. McCarron noted, “You might need to adjust the deal since Guerrero Jr. is only a year from free agency, but big trades require giving up top prospects like Jett Williams and Ryan Clifford, plus a proven player like McNeil.” Guerrero Jr., a 26-year-old star, could potentially be signed to a long-term contract to secure the position for years to come.
However, despite the speculation, the Blue Jays have indicated they aren’t interested in trading Guerrero Jr. or Bo Bichette. Toronto’s GM Ross Atkins confirmed after the trade deadline that they had no intention to move either player, stating, “It was never our intention, and both are key to our future.” He also expressed hopes to sign both players to long-term deals, emphasizing their value to the Blue Jays.
In the past season, Guerrero Jr. posted an impressive .323 batting average with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs.
If the Mets were to acquire Guerrero Jr., this would likely mean Alonso’s departure. Yet, Alonso has expressed a strong desire to remain with the Mets, saying after the team’s playoff elimination, “I love this team, this organization, and the fans. Right now, I’m just focused on our group, and I’d love to stay here in New York.”
Alonso’s performance last season included a .240 average, 34 home runs, and 88 RBIs. As the offseason progresses, the Mets will face significant decisions that could reshape the roster and future direction of the team.
