As the NFL trade deadline approaches and the season unfolds, the Atlanta Falcons are focused on improving their pass rush.
The team has taken steps by drafting Bralen Trice, Brandon Dorlus, and Ruke Orhorhoro, as well as trading for Matthew Judon. However, it’s evident that fully addressing the pass rush will require more than just quick fixes and may take multiple offseasons.
Similar to their strategy regarding the quarterback position last year, the Falcons are likely to prioritize enhancing the pass rush in the coming months. They should aim to acquire multiple pass rushers through both the draft and free agency.
In his latest mock draft, Pro Football Focus’s Trevor Sikkema has the Falcons selecting familiar face Mykel Williams from UGA with the 22nd pick. The front-seven remains Atlanta’s biggest need. While Williams has missed some time this season and is still developing as a pass rusher, he is notably strong in run defense and has the potential to be a three-down player.
Although Williams has appeared in just five games this season, he has recorded 2.0 sacks, five tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and one pass defended. Last year, he demonstrated his potential with 18 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks over 13 games for Georgia.
At only 20 years old, Williams will turn 21 at the start of the 2025 NFL season, making him a highly desirable prospect. However, while the Falcons could benefit from a player like him, it’s important to acknowledge their broader needs.
Atlanta requires seasoned veterans who can make an immediate impact, alongside promising young talents like Williams, to build a reliable pass rush that can maintain effectiveness despite injuries and roster changes.
