Broncos to Part Ways with Two Key Edge Rushers, Insider Reveals

NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero report that Broncos edge rushers Baron Browning and Jonathon Cooper may be on the trade block as the deadline approaches.

Browning, who has seen a decrease in snaps recently and is in a contract year, could be a trade candidate, as indicated by the report. Similarly, starting edge rusher Jonathon Cooper, also in a contract year, might be available.

Browning, a converted linebacker who recorded 4.5 sacks last season, has seen his role reduced with the Broncos, who have depth at the edge position. Linebacker Jonathan Cooper, meanwhile, could draw significant interest, given his strong performances this season.

This report raises questions, considering the Broncos are currently 5-3 and have won five of their last six games, positioning them well for a playoff push. Reducing depth at edge rusher—a critical position—at this stage seems counterintuitive.

If the team were 3-5, moving Browning or Cooper could make sense as they’re both set to enter free agency. But given their current momentum, trading them would be surprising.

Of the two, Browning appears the more likely trade candidate. Cooper has started all eight games and has 5.5 sacks, while Browning has been in a rotational role, with less production. With Nik Bonitto’s impact and rookie Jonah Elliss showing promise, trading Browning could be justified.

Following today’s game, 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis asked Browning about the trade rumors. Browning expressed his desire to stay with the Broncos, acknowledging, “I can only control what I can control. I have to stay in the moment. I do what I can to help this team win games. I would like to stay here. I don’t want to leave, but some things are out of my control.”

Rapoport and Pelissero are reliable NFL sources, so there may be truth to the report. With the trade deadline approaching on November 5th, Denver may still explore options to enhance the roster. They’re likely to be buyers rather than sellers, though moving Browning for a receiver, tight end, or running back could make sense.

What do you think, Broncos fans? Should the team consider trading Browning or Cooper, and if so, what compensation would you expect?
