Injury Woes Hit USC: Multiple Key Starters Likely Out for Crucial Rutgers Matchup

Despite their 3-4 record, the USC Trojans have faced a wave of injuries on both offense and defense, with the defensive side feeling the brunt of the impact.

Star linebacker Eric Gentry opted to redshirt this season after suffering multiple concussions. Just prior to last week’s game against Maryland, it was announced that starting EDGE Anthony Lucas would be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

The secondary has also experienced significant injury issues, with several starters missing games throughout the year. This trend is likely to continue tonight, as four of the five starting defensive backs are expected to be unavailable:

– CB Jaylin Smith
– CB Jacobe Covington
– CB Greedy Vance
– S Kamari Ramsey

Jaylin Smith, USC, Cornerback

Despite the ups and downs, all four players have shown impressive performances when on the field. Smith and Ramsey are particularly noted for their tackling ability, contributing to stretches of elite defensive play.

While losing starters is challenging, it opens the door for other players to step up. If this trend continues, Zion Branch is expected to start alongside Akili Arnold at safety, with Bryson Shaw rotating in. In place of Covington and Smith, John Humphrey and DeCarlos Nicholson will likely take the outside positions, while Prophet Brown and Anthony Beavers Jr. are anticipated to rotate in at Nickel for Vance.

Additionally, starting guard Emmanuel Pregnon is also questionable for the game.

Updates on these players will be provided as kickoff approaches. The Trojans are set to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 8:00 PM PT at the LA Coliseum.
