Landry Shamet signed a non-guaranteed deal with the Knicks, but after Donte DiVincenzo was traded to Minnesota to facilitate the Karl-Anthony Towns deal, it seemed likely that Shamet would make the roster. Unfortunately, he suffered a dislocated shoulder in a preseason game, and depending on the severity, his recovery could take a while if surgery is required.
On Saturday, the Knicks waived Shamet, along with Chuma Okeke and T.J. Warren. This leaves the team with only 12 players and needing to reach 14 by early in the season due to league rules. However, the Knicks are hard-capped under the new CBA and just $3.58 million below the second apron, limiting their options. They are expected to sign one veteran, potentially someone like Lonnie Walker IV, and promote a two-way player like Ariel Hukporti to fill the final spot.
Despite this, the roster challenges mainly impact the back of the bench, and the Knicks still have a strong front rotation to contend for a title this season.
