Less than a week after NBA veteran Danny Green announced his retirement, another former teammate has done the same. Aron Baynes, a former big man for the San Antonio Spurs, has declared his retirement from basketball. Both players were teammates on the Spurs and won a championship together in 2014.
Although Baynes hasn’t officially stated his retirement, his agent, Daniel Moldovan, took to X to congratulate him, sharing heartfelt sentiments about Baynes’ dedication and professionalism throughout his career.
Baynes last played in the NBA during the 2020-21 season with the Toronto Raptors, where he appeared in 53 games and started 31, averaging 6.1 points and 5.2 rebounds. Prior to his time in Toronto, he had solid tenures with several teams, including the Spurs, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, and Phoenix Suns. His best statistical season came with the Suns in 2019-20, where he averaged career highs of 11.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists over 42 games.
From 2012 to 2021, Baynes had a commendable NBA career. While he may not have been an All-Star, he consistently contributed valuable play, developing into a respectable three-point shooter. He played in 522 NBA games, starting 168, with averages of 6 points and 4.6 rebounds. Throughout his career, he played alongside greats like Tim Duncan, Kawhi Leonard, and Jayson Tatum.
In recent years, Baynes played for the Brisbane Bullets in the NBL. As he approached the 2024-25 season, he remained unsigned but expressed openness to continuing his career, focusing on family and enjoying time with his children.
With this latest development, it seems Baynes has chosen to retire, though the reasons behind his decision—whether due to contract opportunities or personal choice—are not fully clear. Nonetheless, he enjoyed a successful career, highlighted by an NBA championship and multiple Olympic appearances.
