49ers Stranded: Two Former Star Players they Can Sign to Strengthen Running Back Depth

The San Francisco 49ers faced another setback in their running back lineup as Jordan Mason suffered a shoulder injury during Thursday night’s win against the Seattle Seahawks.

This season has taught the 49ers the importance of depth at the running back position. Star player Christian McCaffrey has yet to play due to tendinitis in both Achilles tendons, while last year’s No. 2 back, Elijah Mitchell, will miss all of 2024 with an injury.

Mason stepped up well, accumulating over 600 rushing yards in six games, but his impact was limited to just one half against Seattle due to his shoulder injury.

Currently, the 49ers are relying on rookie Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr. for their running back duties. Guerendo showed promise in the last game, but being a rookie, there are uncertainties about his performance. The extent of Mason’s injury remains unclear, but even if he is available next Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, the team would benefit from additional running back depth.

This situation opens the door for the 49ers to consider bringing back familiar faces from the past, and there are a couple of free agent options available.

One potential candidate is Matt Breida, a former 49er known for his speed and productivity during his early years with the team. His departure came after injuries and the rise of Raheem Mostert led to a trade. Although the 49ers brought him back during the preseason, he didn’t perform well enough to secure a roster spot. While he shouldn’t be the primary back, he could provide valuable depth in case of further injuries or struggles from Guerendo and Taylor.

Another option is Jerick McKinnon, whose return might evoke mixed feelings among fans due to his previous large contract with the 49ers that was marred by injuries. Having played for the Chiefs last season—who defeated San Francisco in the Super Bowl—could complicate matters. However, McKinnon’s familiarity with head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system could make him a useful addition for depth.

Given the challenges the 49ers are facing with their running backs this season, signing either Breida or McKinnon could help ensure the team stays competitive in the coming weeks.
