The Dallas Mavericks fell to the Utah Jazz 107-102 in their preseason game on Thursday night. Head coach Jason Kidd is still experimenting with various lineups ahead of the regular season. Notably, Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving made their season debuts for Dallas, having rested during the first game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Given that both players are over 30, the Mavericks are understandably cautious with their minutes, limiting them to just the first half of the game on Thursday.
In that first half, Thompson contributed 10 points and three assists while showcasing solid defensive skills. Although he felt some nerves during his debut, the game hinted at the potential dynamism of the Mavericks’ offense with Irving, Thompson, and Luka Doncic on the court together.
Unfortunately, Thompson experienced some back tightness during the game, raising concerns among fans. Earlier in the preseason, guard Dante Exum underwent wrist surgery that will sideline him for three months, making another injury particularly unwelcome for the Mavericks.
Thompson did not participate fully in Friday’s practice, opting for a walkthrough instead. Coach Kidd mentioned that Thompson received treatment for his back, and an update is expected after practice.
Fortunately, Thompson expressed confidence in being “ready to go” for Monday’s matchup against the LA Clippers at the Intuit Dome. His statement suggests that the back tightness may be minor, possibly just a result of shaking off rust.
Despite his history of significant injuries, including a torn ACL and Achilles, this current issue doesn’t seem related. However, the Mavericks must remain cautious given Thompson’s age and injury past, as he is a vital addition to the team. If his back pain persists or worsens, the Mavericks should prioritize his long-term health over early-season games.
