**Latest Update: Oct. 11, 2:30 p.m.** ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that an MRI on kicker Matthew Wright showed no serious issues, and he is expected to play against the Chiefs on Oct. 20. Wright left the game against the Seahawks with just over a minute remaining after injuring himself while making a tackle.
**Watch More:** On Oct. 11 at 9:35 a.m., the San Francisco 49ers experienced yet another kicker injury during a tackle on kickoff coverage. Wright, who had just been signed, hurt his shoulder tackling Seahawks returner Dee Williams near midfield in the final minutes of Thursday’s 36-24 victory.
Wright was clearly in pain after the tackle, and the Amazon Prime broadcast showed a team doctor attending to him shortly thereafter. Before the game concluded, Wright was seen heading to the locker room, visibly protecting his left arm.
“Oh boy, there goes Matthew Wright,” commented Amazon’s Al Michaels as Wright exited. “Thinking, ‘What was I doing, getting involved in the tackle? Why?’”
Wright had only joined the team three days prior after the 49ers lost their main kicker, Jake Moody, to a similar injury while tackling during a kickoff. Moody sustained a high ankle sprain that will keep him out for several weeks.
The string of injuries has concerned 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who reacted strongly to a sarcastic question about encouraging kickers to make tackles, indicating he may rethink their approach during kickoffs.
“Hell no. I don’t know how I feel about that anymore,” Shanahan stated. “When they break through and they’re the last line, I would never tell them to let the opponent score. But dang, that’s two weeks in a row. I just hope he’s alright.”
Despite the injury scare, Shanahan and commentators praised Wright for his performance, noting he was 6-for-6 in kicking, which included three field goals and three extra points.
As of Friday morning, the extent of Wright’s injury remains uncertain, but the 49ers are likely feeling a sense of déjà vu.
