The Dallas Mavericks have waived AJ Lawson, as announced by the team on Monday. Lawson becomes the first cut from the Mavericks’ training camp as the team works to finalize its roster ahead of opening night later this month.
After re-signing Markieff Morris last month, the Mavericks needed to release one player by October 19 to comply with the first apron of the league’s collective bargaining agreement. Lawson had initially been a two-way player before signing a full contract last season.
“A.J. has been great for us,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said after the announcement. “Unfortunately, we had to waive him today. We wish him the best. He showed impressive athleticism and made significant improvements. He did everything we asked, and while there was notable growth in his game, management had to make a tough decision.”
Lawson spent two seasons with the Mavericks, primarily as a two-way player. Last season, he scored a career-high 17 points in a December game against the San Antonio Spurs. Over his two seasons in Dallas, he averaged 3.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. He initially joined the Mavericks during the 2022 Summer League and has been part of their Summer League roster for the past three years.
An undrafted forward from South Carolina, Lawson earned his spot on the Mavericks with his remarkable athleticism and speed. Known as a 3-and-D player, his highlights included making spot-up threes and executing dunks in transition. However, with the Mavericks aiming for a championship and having a roster full of experienced contributors, it was challenging to keep Lawson on the roster for opening night.
There is still a possibility for Lawson to return, as the Mavericks have one remaining two-way contract available. However, training camp invites Jazian Gortman and Emanuel Miller are likely leading candidates, especially following their strong performance in the Mavericks’ first preseason game against Memphis on Sunday.
