“After leading the Atlanta Falcons to a thrilling 36-30 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quarterback Kirk Cousins basked in the moment, surfing the crowd with the swagger of a player who just delivered the most productive game of his 13-year career.
More importantly, Cousins looked strong and confident on his surgically repaired right Achilles, which he injured last season in Week 8. Just over 11 months post-injury, Cousins’ 42-of-58, 509-yard, four-touchdown performance suggested he’s back to full health.
However, Cousins remains cautious, acknowledging the typical bumps and bruises that come with the season.
“I’m fully recovered from the Achilles injury,” Cousins said postgame. “But now it’s the usual stuff — my thumb hurts, my left knee. It’s all part of the game.”
Cousins’ performance set franchise records for both completions and passing yards in a single game, surpassing marks previously held by Matt Ryan, who was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor during halftime.
Despite showing some pocket mobility against Tampa Bay, Cousins understands he’ll never be a scrambling quarterback. At 36, he recalled advice from retired signal callers, who assured him he could thrive by mastering accuracy from the pocket, rather than relying on his legs.
“‘No, you’re going to have to do it from the pocket. Be accurate — that’s the key,’” Cousins said, echoing their wisdom. “That’s how I’ve always played, and it sets me up to keep going, even as I get older.”
Cousins emphasized that he feels good—somewhere between 26 and 36 years old. Thursday night, he not only turned back the clock but offered a glimpse into the Falcons’ offensive potential. The question now is whether Cousins can sustain this form. If not, health won’t be the reason.”
