The Indiana Pacers recently selected Johnny Furphy from Australia in the second round of the draft. Known for his versatility and shooting skills, there were hopes he could make an immediate impact, especially after a strong showing in the Summer League. However, those expectations may need to be adjusted for now.
Furphy is currently dealing with injuries to both ankles. Head coach Rick Carlisle mentioned, via SI.com’s Tony East, that the rookie has been struggling with these injuries, and he tweaked one ankle again today. As a result, Furphy has been inconsistent in practice.
At this point, there’s no need for alarm regarding Furphy’s condition, as the injuries appear to be minor, and he hasn’t been fully sidelined. Nevertheless, reports indicate that Carlisle plans to give Furphy and a few other players a break from practice to aid in their recovery.
It’s worth noting that Indiana’s first preseason game is less than a week away, making it essential to monitor Furphy’s status, as he might miss that game.
Additionally, the Pacers are facing other injury concerns. During Media Day, Carlisle revealed that James Wiseman, who was signed as a free agent earlier this offseason, is also dealing with a groin injury, which will limit his participation in training camp.
Like Furphy, Wiseman was viewed as a player who could provide immediate help to the team. Although his NBA career hasn’t progressed as hoped, he brings valuable size and athleticism, offering potential for a turnaround.
The Pacers are currently one of the most exciting teams in the Eastern Conference. They reached the conference finals for the first time since 2014, and despite losing to the eventual champions, the Boston Celtics, they demonstrated their competitiveness.
The regular season for the Pacers begins on October 23 against the Detroit Pistons. By then, Furphy should be healthy enough to contribute and showcase his skills if called upon.
