The Virginia Tech Hokies came close to pulling off a major upset at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday night against the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes, but a controversial call in the final moments allowed Miami to escape with a 38-34 win.
After trailing for most of the game, Miami regained the lead late in the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech had one final chance, throwing a Hail Mary as time expired that was initially ruled a touchdown. However, after review, officials overturned the call, ruling the pass incomplete and securing the Hurricanes’ victory.
Heisman contender Cam Ward shone for Miami, earning ACC Quarterback of the Week honors for his gritty performance. His leadership was crucial to Miami’s narrow win, further solidifying his standout status in the conference.
This marks Ward’s second consecutive ACC Quarterback of the Week award. Despite some inconsistency in his play, he made critical contributions, completing 24 of 38 passes for 343 yards and four touchdowns, along with two interceptions. He also added 57 rushing yards and a touchdown, making it his fifth straight game with over 300 passing yards.
Although the Hurricanes improved to 5-0, they dropped to No. 8 in the top-25 rankings. Still, they remain strong contenders for the College Football Playoff.
