The Arizona Cardinals felt the absence of tight end Trey McBride in their Week 4 loss to the Washington Commanders, but he may return soon.
McBride was sidelined after entering concussion protocol following a hit to the head during the Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He didn’t practice in the lead-up to the Washington game.
Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was cautious about confirming McBride’s clearance from concussion protocol but expressed optimism about his potential return for Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers, stating, “It’s looking good” though the exact steps forward remain unclear.
McBride, who led the Cardinals in receptions before his injury, was sorely missed in an offense that managed only 14 points. Backup Elijah Higgins, filling in for McBride, had two receptions for 12 yards.
Arizona’s offense struggled to maintain momentum after an opening drive touchdown, with quarterback Kyler Murray emphasizing the need for better third-down execution to relieve pressure on the defense.
McBride’s return could provide a boost as the Cardinals face a tough road test against the 49ers. Wednesday’s practice will reveal if he’s ready to rejoin the lineup.
