Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen, a four-time All-Star, will miss the final six games of the season after being placed on the 15-day injured list due to a sore right shoulder. Boston has called up right-hander Chase Shugart from Triple-A Worcester to fill the roster spot.
Jansen, who turns 37 next week, has posted a 4-2 record with a 3.29 ERA and 27 saves in 31 chances this season, his 15th in the majors. He will become a free agent after the World Series.
On Sunday, Jansen pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout in the first game of a doubleheader against Minnesota, but manager Alex Cora noted after the second game that Jansen had been feeling soreness and would likely land on the injured list.
A former National League saves leader with the Dodgers in 2017 and Braves in 2022, Jansen won a World Series with Los Angeles in 2020 before joining Boston on a two-year contract ahead of the 2023 season. With 447 career saves, he holds the most among active players and is fourth in MLB history.
