The Baltimore Orioles made a notable roster adjustment on Tuesday by optioning outfielder Eloy Jimenez to Triple-A Norfolk and reinstating infielder Ryan Mountcastle from the 10-day injured list, as reported by MLB insider Robert Murray. This move aims to strengthen the Orioles’ lineup as they approach the final stretch of the regular season.
Mountcastle, who has been out since late August due to a sprained left wrist, is set to return to the Orioles’ roster. Before his injury, the 26-year-old first baseman had tallied 13 home runs, 61 RBIs, and a .730 OPS over 452 at-bats this season. His comeback is expected to provide essential depth to Baltimore’s infield during their playoff pursuit.
Conversely, Jimenez, acquired from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline, has struggled to establish himself with the Orioles. The 27-year-old outfielder posted a disappointing .232/.270/.316 batting line over 33 games, contributing just one home run, five doubles, and seven RBIs in 100 plate appearances.
Jimenez’s demotion is a letdown, given that his acquisition was intended to enhance Baltimore’s outfield. Despite previously showcasing potential in Chicago and signing a six-year extension with options for 2025 and 2026, his underwhelming performance with the Orioles led to this decision.
Although Jimenez had the option to reject the assignment due to his service time, he accepted it, indicating his desire to improve and regain his place in the majors. As the Orioles strive for a postseason berth, they hope Mountcastle’s return will invigorate their lineup while Jimenez works on his hitting in Norfolk.
