Lions Lose Key DE to Season-Ending Injury Following Victory Over Cardinals

Detroit Lions defensive end Marcus Davenport sustained what appears to be a season-ending elbow injury during the team’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Head coach Dan Campbell shared the news on Monday, noting that Davenport is consulting with additional specialists. The injury occurred in the third quarter on Sunday, though Davenport briefly returned to the game with a sleeve on his left arm.

In addition, linebacker Derrick Barnes is expected to be out for an extended period due to a knee injury he suffered during the same game, Campbell added.

Other injured key players, including tight end Sam LaPorta (ankle) and safety Brian Branch (concussion), are listed as day-to-day. Campbell mentioned that Branch is in the concussion protocol but is showing signs of improvement.

Davenport, 28, signed a one-year, $7.095 million contract with the Lions in free agency earlier this year. He played in two of the team’s first three games, missing Week 2 with a groin injury, and recorded a half-sack in the Lions’ overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1.

Throughout his career, Davenport has struggled with injuries. Since being drafted in the first round by the New Orleans Saints in 2018, injuries have limited him to 63 games in five seasons. Last year with the Minnesota Vikings, he played just four games due to a right ankle injury.
