**WASHINGTON** – Joel Embiid has officially signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers, as announced by the team on September 20. The Cameroon-born center expressed his desire to remain with the Sixers for his entire NBA career.
Reports indicate that the deal is a maximum extension for three years, valued at approximately $193 million, ensuring he stays with the team through the 2028-29 season.
“Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career,” Embiid shared on Instagram.
“I love this community and all that you’ve given me and my family. There’s much more work ahead. You all deserve a championship, and I believe we’re just getting started!”
Embiid, the 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player, stands at 2.13m and is a seven-time NBA All-Star who played a key role in helping the U.S. win Olympic gold in Paris.
As a two-time NBA scoring champion entering his ninth season this October, he reiterated his goal of bringing the Sixers their first championship since 1983.
“I started as a Sixer and want to finish my career here. I had no idea how fortunate I was to end up in Philadelphia when I was drafted at 20,” he stated. “Through all the highs and lows, this city and its fans have meant everything to me. I’m incredibly grateful for their support. Philadelphia is home, and it’s time to deliver an NBA championship to this community.”
In the 2023-24 season, Embiid posted career highs with an average of 34.7 points, 5.6 assists, and 1.2 steals, along with 11.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots. He also achieved personal bests in three-point shooting (38.8%) and free-throw shooting (88.3%).
“Joel has solidified his place as one of the greatest Sixers ever and is on track to become one of the best players in NBA history,” said Daryl Morey, president of basketball operations. “We’re thrilled this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come.”
Embiid, selected as the third overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, has averaged 27.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 blocks over 433 games with the Sixers.
The Philadelphia team has made the playoffs for the last seven seasons but has yet to reach the Eastern Conference Finals during that time.
