The Philadelphia Eagles made several significant moves during the offseason and draft to strengthen their defensive secondary. However, after two games, it appears they might need additional support. General manager Howie Roseman has shown he’s willing to make bold decisions to enhance the team. Bleacher Report recently suggested that the Eagles could be a potential destination for three-time All-Pro safety Budda Baker of the Arizona Cardinals.
“Baker would be a valuable addition to any team’s defense,” Bleacher Report noted, although acquiring him would likely require a contract extension. Baker has been in trade talks since he requested either a new deal or a trade last offseason, ultimately settling for a pay increase over the last two years of his contract.
The Eagles have a history of extending contracts for players who commit to the team and provide a strong return on investment. Baker has been selected to the Pro Bowl in six of his eight NFL seasons. Given the Eagles’ ongoing secondary issues, Bleacher Report argued they should actively pursue Baker. While Philadelphia currently boasts a solid safety duo in C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Reed Blankenship, Baker’s versatility could be an asset in defensive schemes under Vic Fangio.
The article did not mention any potential trade compensation, but the Eagles recently signed Gardner-Johnson to a three-year deal. If they intend to extend Baker’s contract, trading Blankenship back to Arizona could be a viable option.
As of now, the Cardinals are 1-1 after a decisive win over the Los Angeles Rams but face a tough upcoming schedule against the Lions, Commanders, 49ers, and Packers. If they struggle and fall to 2-4, it might be time to consider trading away some players, making it worthwhile for Roseman to explore acquiring Baker.
