The Indianapolis Colts will be without key defensive player DeForest Buckner for at least four games after placing him on injured reserve due to a sprained right ankle. Buckner, a three-time Pro Bowler, has been a cornerstone of the Colts’ defense since being traded from the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.
This marks just the second game Buckner will miss during his time in Indianapolis, despite consistently playing through various injuries, including a back issue earlier this season. His absence is a significant setback for the Colts as they attempt to rebound from an 0-2 start.
Buckner’s impact extends beyond the defensive line. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley emphasized Buckner’s leadership and resilience, noting how his teammates respect and trust him, especially for his ability to play through adversity. Bradley described Buckner as a “strong presence” on the field, whose absence will be deeply felt.
The injury comes at a tough time for the Colts, whose run defense has struggled, allowing a league-high 474 rushing yards through two games, with two opposing players surpassing 100 yards. Without Buckner, the Colts face the difficult task of plugging the gaps on their defensive line.
In addition to Buckner, the Colts are dealing with other injuries on defense. Starting cornerback JuJu Brents is on injured reserve with a knee injury, safety Julian Blackmon missed Week 2 with a shoulder issue, and rookie pass rusher Laiatu Latu injured his hip in the most recent game.
In Buckner’s absence, the Colts will rely on players like Grover Stewart, Raekwon Davis, Adetomiwa Adebawore, and Taven Bryan to step up. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, under scrutiny for the team’s early struggles, stressed that the coaching staff is working to position these players for success. However, with mounting injuries and a winless start, the Colts face a challenging road ahead in fixing their defensive woes.
