Mets’ Star Right-Hander Willing to Embrace Bullpen Role When Key Player Returns from Critical Injury

Jose Quintana understands the critical moment for the New York Mets as they fight to secure the second and final National League Wild Card spot. As a result, he is open to making personal sacrifices to help the team succeed in the final stretch of the season.

Currently, the Mets (82-68) hold the sixth and last playoff spot, but their lead over the Atlanta Braves (81-69) is slim. Quintana has been a key player in the Mets’ resurgence after a tough start to the year. Since June 15, he has posted a commendable 8-4 record without allowing his ERA to exceed 5.00 in any game.

Quintana is prepared to step aside from his starting role if it means helping the team once injured ace Kodai Senga returns. If Senga comes back, Quintana would be positioned as the fifth-best starter in the rotation, behind Senga, Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and David Peterson.

“My focus is on my next start, but when Senga comes back, he’ll be a huge asset,” Quintana said. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help the team. It’s not about me right now; it’s about the team. If it benefits the team, I’m ready to make that adjustment.”

Quintana, who last played as a reliever in 2021 with the Angels and Giants, is ready to contribute in any role needed. The Mets require additional strength both in their bullpen and starting rotation, and Quintana’s recent performance makes him a valuable asset as the playoffs approach.
