The Toronto Blue Jays have brought back former catcher Tyler Heineman by claiming him off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. To make room for Heineman, the Blue Jays have designated catcher Brian Serven for assignment.
Heineman, 33, originally joined the Blue Jays ahead of the 2022 season but played only 10 games before being claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He returned to Toronto in April 2023 via a trade for Vinny Capra, only to be waived again and picked up by the New York Mets in December 2023. The Mets later designated him for assignment, and Heineman was traded to the Red Sox in February 2024. This move comes as a surprise with just two weeks left in the regular season.

Brian Serven, 29, had a solid rapport with pitcher Bowden Francis, who has been performing well in the latter part of the season. While Serven’s offensive contributions were modest, Heineman brings more experience and a stronger bat. This marks Heineman’s third stint with the Blue Jays, having played briefly with them, the Marlins, and the Giants earlier in his career.
Heineman has had a somewhat inconsistent career, frequently moving between teams and spending substantial time in the minors. This season with the Red Sox, he appeared in only two games at the major league level but had a notable performance in the minors, with six home runs, 27 RBIs, and eight stolen bases across Triple-A and Double-A. Known for his switch-hitting ability, solid defensive skills, strong arm, and good baserunning, Heineman will look to make a significant impact as he rejoins the Blue Jays.
