The Carolina Panthers have decided to bench quarterback Bryce Young, opting to start veteran Andy Dalton in his place. Head coach Dave Canales announced the change on Monday, marking a significant shift for the team’s offense.
Young, the top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has struggled to make an impact, leading the Panthers to a dismal 2-15 record last season and starting this season with two losses. Carolina’s decision to select Young came at a high cost, including trading wide receiver D.J. Moore and multiple draft picks to the Chicago Bears. One of those picks contributed to the Bears selecting USC quarterback Caleb Williams first overall in the 2024 Draft.
In his brief NFL career, Young has faced challenges, compiling a 2-16 record as a starter. His performance this season includes 244 passing yards, three interceptions, and a single rushing touchdown. The Panthers have been outscored 73-13 in their two games so far.
Young’s performance has drawn criticism from fans, and despite his faith and self-accountability, his play has not met expectations. In contrast, Dalton, a seasoned veteran with a record of 83-78-2 and significant experience with the Cincinnati Bengals, is now tasked with leading the Panthers. Dalton’s extensive career includes 246 touchdown passes and 144 interceptions.
Canales explained the decision, stating that Dalton offers the best chance for immediate success. He admitted that reviewing game film influenced the decision, noting that Young’s performance did not align with the team’s goals.
The move allows Young to observe from the sidelines and potentially reset, while Dalton brings veteran leadership to the team. The Panthers will face the Los Angeles Raiders this weekend, hoping to turn their season around.
