The Michigan Wolverines have started the season 2-1, with their only loss coming against the Texas Longhorns in Week 2. In Week 3, head coach Sherrone Moore made a quarterback change during the game against Arkansas State. Davis Warren, who threw for just 122 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions, was replaced by Alex Orji. On Monday, Moore officially named Orji the new starting quarterback, as reported by Austin Meek of The Athletic: “Alex Orji will be Michigan’s starting QB against USC.”
Orji, who also rushed for 27 yards on three carries and threw a touchdown in the Week 1 blowout against Fresno State, has been used primarily in a change-of-pace role this season. Warren, after being named the starter, has struggled, throwing for just 44 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions over three games.
The Wolverines’ offense has been slow to start this year. They scored 30 points in their Week 1 victory over Fresno State, with Orji contributing a passing touchdown and Will Johnson adding a pick-six. In Week 2, Warren managed just one touchdown pass late in a lopsided loss to Texas, prompting the need for a change at quarterback.
Michigan kicks off its Big Ten Conference schedule with a home game against USC in Week 4, followed by matchups against Minnesota and Washington before a Week 7 bye.
