CLEVELAND, Ohio — As the Guardians near the end of the season and fight for a playoff spot, difficult roster decisions are becoming unavoidable. Following Friday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, manager Stephen Vogt informed utility player Tyler Freeman that he would be sent down to Class AAA Columbus.
The move was necessary to bring up switch-hitting Angel Martinez, who was recalled after All-Star left fielder Steven Kwan was sidelined with a back injury. Kwan, a vital part of the Guardians’ lineup, is currently listed as day-to-day, and his absence comes at a critical time as Cleveland pushes for the postseason.
Kwan, known for his speed, defense, and consistent hitting, has played a pivotal role in Cleveland’s success this season. His injury, though not expected to be long-term, increases the pressure in the tight AL Central race. Martinez, with his switch-hitting ability, will help bolster the lineup. Freeman, a versatile and reliable player this season, will head to Columbus but could potentially be recalled as the Guardians make their final push.
Manager Vogt acknowledged the challenge of the decision and stressed the need for the right combination of players as the team looks to secure a playoff spot.
“We’re in a critical part of the season, and every decision matters. Tyler has been great for us, but with Kwan out, we had to make this move,” Vogt said. “Angel brings a lot of value, and we’ll need everyone contributing in these last games.”
As the Guardians prepare for the next series, Kwan’s recovery will be closely watched, with hopes he can return to the field soon.
