The New York Giants face the Washington Commanders in Week 2, and there was uncertainty about whether Malik Nabers would play after being limited in practice. However, on Sept. 13, head coach Brian Daboll confirmed that Nabers is good to go, with no lingering concerns about his knee injury. Nabers had appeared on the injury report during the week but participated in practice in a limited capacity.
“Giants first-round pick Malik Nabers has been cleared for Sunday,” tweeted ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Following a disappointing season opener loss to the Minnesota Vikings, having Nabers on the field is crucial for the Giants’ offense, which only managed 240 total yards, with 166 from the passing game.
Malik Nabers led the Giants’ passing attack in Week 1, recording six catches for 66 yards, including the team’s longest reception of the game at 25 yards. As a rookie, he’s expected to be the top receiver for the team and could lead the Giants in all receiving categories by season’s end.
Nabers will also face his college quarterback, Jayden Daniels when the Giants take on the Commanders in Week 2. Reflecting on their time together at LSU, Nabers said, “Without him, I probably wouldn’t be here right now. Having him as my quarterback took a lot of stress off me, and I did the same for him by getting open. But we’re in a different place now, though it’s still the same game.”
To get back on track, quarterback Daniel Jones will need to improve after a rough Week 1 where he threw for 186 yards and two interceptions, contributing to the Giants scoring just six points. Despite the struggles, Jones remains confident, saying, “I feel like I’ve been doubted plenty and handled it well. I think my mental toughness is in a good place.”
With Nabers healthy and ready to play, the Giants’ offense has its best chance to succeed and turn their season around.
