Sooners to Secure No. 1 Running Back Prospect in High-Stakes Recruitment

As the class of 2026 gains attention, new offers continue to roll in for top talents. One of those elite prospects is Davian Groce, who announced Wednesday night that he received an offer from the Oklahoma Sooners. With this, OU has entered the race for a standout player in the junior class.

According to 247Sports rankings, Groce is ranked as the No. 17 overall recruit for the 2026 class and is considered the top running back of the cycle. A four-star prospect on the cusp of five-star status, Groce is also rated as the No. 2 player in Texas by 247Sports.

National scouting analyst Gabe Brooks from 247Sports described Groce as a “unique offensive playmaker” with the potential for a big frame. Despite his height and upright running style, Groce demonstrates ankle flexibility, quick cuts, and impressive speed, evidenced by his 10.90 100-meter time as a freshman. He excels at both running back and wide receiver, making him a versatile and high-impact offensive weapon.

During his sophomore season in 2023, Groce showcased his versatility, accumulating nearly 1,800 yards from scrimmage and 22 touchdowns. He rushed for 936 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 7.67 yards per carry, and caught 45 passes for 860 yards and nine touchdowns at 19.1 yards per reception. This combination of skill has earned him an extensive offer list and a top ranking.

Groce expressed gratitude for the recognition of his hard work, saying, “It just means the world that people are noticing everything I’ve done to get here.”

Oklahoma is expected to be a major player in Groce’s recruitment, particularly given its connection to Lone Star High in Frisco, Texas, where Groce plays. He is teammates with Oklahoma’s 2026 tight end commit Ryder Mix and priority safety target Jordan Deck. With programs like Texas A&M and Penn State also involved, Groce plans to assess how each school envisions using his versatile talents.

“I want to see where they see me playing,” Groce said. “I’m versatile enough to play receiver and running back and want to see how coaches will use me.”
