The Notre Dame football team is facing another potential challenge in retaining a key recruit, as wide receiver commit Elijah Burress may be considering other options. After already dealing with concerns about quarterback commit Deuce Knight’s wavering commitment, reports have now surfaced about Burress being heavily recruited by Michigan State, his father’s alma mater.
Burress, a 3-star prospect and son of former NFL wide receiver Plaxico Burress, committed to Notre Dame in February. While his commitment hasn’t been as long-standing as Knight’s, both players face similar pulls—Knight with his home state and Burress with the opportunity to play for the same school his father attended.
Despite the increased efforts from Michigan State, Burress has not yet de-committed from Notre Dame and doesn’t currently have plans to visit Michigan State. However, the situation remains concerning for the Fighting Irish, especially as they are coming off a surprising loss to Northern Illinois.
The challenge of holding onto recruits like Burress may grow as the season progresses, with other schools looking to capitalize on any perceived weaknesses. To keep Burress in the fold, Notre Dame will need to show improvement on the field, particularly in the passing game, as they aim to demonstrate why South Bend is still the best place for him.
As National Signing Day approaches, the competition for committed players will only intensify, making it crucial for Notre Dame to right the ship and regain momentum.
