On a recent episode of *The Hoop Collective* with ESPN NBA insiders Brian Windhorst, Tim Bontemps, and Tim MacMahon, the potential trade of Robert Williams III was a hot topic.
Currently with the Portland Trail Blazers, Williams has struggled with injuries, appearing in only 41 games over the past two seasons, including just six in his debut year with Portland.
Windhorst mentioned, “A player to keep an eye on who could be on the move is Robert Williams, known as ‘The Time Lord.’ Despite his injury history, he earns $13 million, and Portland might be open to trading him. If he can stay healthy, he could be a key asset for a contender.”
Williams could be an attractive trade candidate for the OKC Thunder if he returns to his pre-injury form. During the 2021-22 season, Williams had a standout year with the Boston Celtics, averaging 10 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2.2 blocks per game, which earned him Second Team All-Defense honors and a spot in Defensive Player of the Year voting. He also shot over 73% from the field that season.
Although Williams has faced injury setbacks since then, his size (6-foot-9, 237 pounds) and strength could address Oklahoma City’s rebounding needs. His passing ability could fit well in Mark Daigneault’s system, despite not being a perimeter shooter.
However, with the recent $87 million contract for Isaiah Hartenstein, Williams’ role might overlap somewhat. Nevertheless, Williams has the versatility to play alongside either Chet Holmgren or Hartenstein, or to fit into small-ball lineups.
If the Blazers decide to trade Williams, Oklahoma City could be a prime destination for the 26-year-old.
