The Cleveland Guardians made notable roster moves on Sunday, designating veteran right-hander Scott Barlow for assignment and re-signing left-handed reliever Anthony Gose. This comes a day after Cleveland’s bullpen was called upon to cover 7 1/3 innings following a short outing by starting pitcher Gavin Williams.
Scott Barlow, 31, was acquired by the Guardians from the San Diego Padres last November in exchange for right-hander Enyel De Los Santos. Barlow has had a mixed season with Cleveland, making 63 appearances and recording a 3-3 record, along with three saves and a 4.25 ERA. In his 55 innings of work, he struck out 68 batters. Despite his strikeout ability, Barlow struggled with consistency throughout the year, which led to the Guardians’ decision to designate him for assignment.
The Guardians also brought back lefty Anthony Gose, who will be rejoining the team for the fourth time this season. Gose has had a brief and challenging stint with Cleveland in 2024, making just two appearances. Over 3 1/3 innings pitched, he has struck out two batters, walked one, and allowed three earned runs on six hits. The 34-year-old has been designated three times already this year but continues to be an option for the Guardians due to his ability to provide bullpen depth when needed.
Cleveland’s bullpen has been heavily taxed recently, making these moves necessary to stabilize the pitching staff as the team pushes through the final stretch of the season. With Barlow’s struggles and Gose’s familiarity with the team, the Guardians are hoping these adjustments will help improve their relief pitching performance.
